Choosing your favourite Caladium leaf type

Choosing your favourite Caladium leaf type

Caladiums come in different leaf shapes and sizes, and each type has its own unique charm!

🌱 Fancy Leaf Caladium
Known for their large, heart shaped leaves and tall stems. Their leaves usually have smooth, rounded edges.

🌿 Lance Leaf Caladium
Have narrower, elongated leaves with a more pointed shape. Their stems are generally shorter, giving the plant a more compact appearance.

πŸƒ Strap Leaf Caladium
Have long, narrow leaves that resemble ribbons or straps, with shorter stems and a more compact growth habit.

πŸ” A Little Botanical Note

One interesting way to tell these types apart is by looking at where the leaf stem attaches to the leaf itself.

  • Fancy Leaf: The leaf stem attaches underneath the leaf blade, away from the edge.
  • Lance & Strap Leaf: The leaf stem attaches closer to the edge of the leaf.

This difference is called peltate (Fancy Leaf) versus non-peltate (Lance and Strap Leaf). Don’t worry about remembering the botanical terms. Just look at where the stem meets the leaf! 🌱

Another interesting observation: with a similar sized corm, Lance and Strap Leaf Caladiums can often produce and hold more leaves than Fancy Leaf varieties.

Each type has its own beauty, whether you love the bold, oversized leaves of Fancy Leaf or the elegant, slender foliage of Lance and Strap Leaf.
